The King by Skye Warren book review.
3 * out 5*
I lept into this book immediately after finishing the Pawn ( the 1st book in the series). The first book left off with a slight cliffhanger and some crazy crap went down the very last chapter!
This book left off pretty much where the first one ended and kept me intrigued. I had a love/hate relationship with Gabriel and it pissed me off how he handled his emotions in the first book. My heart broke for Avery when he was dismissive of her after giving herself to him. Any woman knows that is one of the most vulnerable moments in our lives, and to have someone treat like you are nothing the moment its done is damaging. I wanted to bitch slap him in his balls!
Of course this book is similar to the first as Avery is still in the 30 day window with Gabriel even though he threw her out. We find out the money she made from the auction is in a trust and she can not touch it until the entire 30 days is up. So you can imagine she is broke and heart broken. Poor girl, it's hard not to feel for her.
BUT, my biggest grievance with this book is WHY THE HELL DID YOU WRITE THAT JUSTIN WAS MISSING!!! His ass just pops up in the second book with NO mention of him just dropping off the face of the earth?!?!!? What, excuse me, I even went back to re-read that part just to make sure I read it right. Yup, I did, his ass was missing after his confrontation with Gabriel on the ladder. So, unless this is visited again in the other books, I am not sure why she added that to the book..... Makes me as a reader think that she forgot that tidbit when writing the second book.
Any who, I enjoyed the book. It was good and kept me reading. But, it took a different turn and I wasn't feeling it. The first book is a lot about this dysfunctional relationship between Gabriel and Avery, but the second book starts to weave the mystery of Avery's mother and what truly happened to her.
I have not started the 3rd book but I will as it ended with a lot of questions and no answers. This author is great with the narrative and making the characters likable even in their darkest moments. This is a great book just like the 1st when you want a good solid read that keeps your interest.
